AP Biology

Course Description

AP Biology is a college-level course designed to help students explore the core principles of life and living systems. The course emphasizes understanding biological concepts through inquiry, experimentation, and analysis rather than memorization. Students investigate topics such as evolution, cellular processes, genetics, ecology, and organismal biology. Throughout the year, they develop scientific thinking skills by designing experiments, interpreting data, and making evidence-based conclusions.

Key Components:

  • Four Big Ideas: Evolution, cellular processes, information transfer, and system interactions
  • Laboratory Investigations: Guided and student-led experiments to explore biological questions
  • Data Analysis and Application: Using real-world data to support conclusions and predictions
  • Scientific Thinking and Communication: Explaining biological phenomena through models, evidence, and clear reasoning

AP Biology Score Distribution

  • Rising top scores: The percentage of students earning a 5 more than doubled from 7.4% in 2021 to 19% in 2025. This suggests improved performance or possibly changes in exam preparation or content emphasis.

  • Consistently high pass rate: The pass rate (score of 3 or higher) stayed strong, rising from 59.2% in 2021 to 71% in 2025. This is the highest over the six years shown.

  • Mean score recovery: After dipping to 2.83 in 2021, the mean score climbed steadily to 3.15 in 2024, indicating a return to pre-2021 performance levels and possibly a better-aligned curriculum or improved instruction.
