AP Environmental Science Score Distribution

  • Big 2025 jump: In 2025, the percentage of students earning a 3 or higher rose significantly to 69%, up from just 54.1% in 2024 — the biggest year-over-year gain in the dataset.

  • Gradual score stagnation, then spike: From 2021 to 2024, the mean score hovered around 2.79, but in 2025, both the percentage of 5s (12%) and 3s (29%) surged, suggesting either test adjustments or better student prep.

  • Larger test pool: The number of test takers climbed steadily, rising from about 149,000 in 2021 to over 236,000 in 2024, with 2025 likely surpassing that. Despite this growth, scores improved, which is unusual for a scaling exam.
