AP Physics 1: Algebra-Based

Course Description

AP Physics 1 is a college-level course that introduces students to the foundational principles of physics through inquiry-based investigations and real-world applications. The course emphasizes conceptual understanding, mathematical reasoning, and the development of scientific thinking. Students explore topics such as motion, forces, energy, momentum, and waves while strengthening their skills in data analysis and experimental design.

Key Components:

  • Kinematics and Dynamics: Understanding motion and the forces that cause it

  • Work, Energy, and Power: Exploring energy transfer and conservation in physical systems

  • Waves and Simple Harmonic Motion: Investigating wave behavior and oscillatory motion

  • Scientific Practices: Designing experiments, analyzing data, and interpreting results using evidence and physics principles

AP Physics 1 Score Distribution

  • Major 2025 boost: The percentage of students scoring 3 or higher jumped to 66% in 2025, up from 47.3% in 2024 — a dramatic 19-point increase, with 5s nearly doubling from 10.2% to 18%.

  • Historically low scores: From 2021–2024, Physics 1 consistently had one of the lowest average scores on any AP exam (mean ranged from 2.41 to 2.59), suggesting either a tough test or lack of preparation.

  • Long-term trend reverses: Since 2020, scores had been slowly declining (from 2.65 to 2.41 by 2021), but 2025 marked the first sharp reversal, with gains in every performance tier except for 1s and 2s, which dropped significantly.
