AP French Language and Culture is a college-level course that allows students to develop and showcase their skills in French while exploring a wide range of Francophone cultural topics. The course emphasizes real-world communication and intercultural competence through the integration of authentic texts, audio, and visual materials. Students engage in interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational tasks that require critical thinking, language precision, and cultural awareness.
Key Components:
AP French Language and Culture does not have a traditional written exam. Instead, students complete a comprehensive exam in May, which is scored by the College Board and makes up 100% of the AP score. The exam assesses proficiency in the three modes of communication: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational.
Interpersonal Tasks: A simulated conversation and an email response in French that require students to interact appropriately and effectively in real-world contexts.
Interpretive Tasks: Reading and listening comprehension questions based on authentic French texts and audio recordings, including articles, interviews, and literary works.
Presentational Tasks: A recorded cultural comparison and a persuasive essay that demonstrate students’ ability to organize ideas, use appropriate vocabulary, and express cultural insights.
The exam is evaluated for fluency, grammatical accuracy, vocabulary use, and the ability to communicate clearly and appropriately across a variety of cultural and situational contexts.
