AP German Language and Culture

Course Description

AP German Language and Culture is a college-level course that allows students to develop and showcase their skills in German while exploring cultural themes from across the German-speaking world. The course emphasizes real-life communication and intercultural understanding through a wide range of authentic materials and tasks. Students build proficiency throughout the year by engaging in listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities that require both language accuracy and cultural awareness.

Key Components:

  • Interpersonal Communication: Engaging in spoken and written exchanges in German across a variety of real-world contexts
  • Interpretive Communication: Understanding and analyzing written texts and audio materials from authentic German sources
  • Presentational Communication: Creating spoken and written responses to express ideas and cultural comparisons clearly and effectively.

AP Exam Details

  • AP German Language and Culture does not have a traditional written exam. Instead, students complete a computer-based exam in May, which is scored by the College Board and makes up 100% of the AP score. The exam includes:

    • Interpersonal Speaking: A simulated conversation in German where students respond to prompts in real time to demonstrate spontaneous and appropriate communication.

    • Interpersonal Writing: An email response in German that requires students to use proper format, tone, and vocabulary to address a specific scenario.

    • Interpretive Communication: Reading and listening comprehension questions based on authentic German texts and audio materials, such as articles, interviews, and narratives.

    • Presentational Communication: A recorded cultural comparison and a persuasive essay that assess students’ ability to organize ideas and express opinions with clarity and cultural insight.

    The exam is evaluated for fluency, grammatical accuracy, vocabulary control, and the ability to interpret and produce German across a variety of real-world and culturally relevant content.
