AP Japanese Language and Culture
Course Description
AP Japanese Language and Culture is a college-level course that allows students to develop and showcase their skills in Japanese while exploring a variety of cultural themes from Japan. The course emphasizes practical communication through reading, writing, listening, and speaking, using authentic materials that reflect everyday life and cultural practices. Students strengthen their proficiency by engaging with real-world tasks that require both linguistic accuracy and cultural understanding.

- Interpersonal Communication: Participating in spoken and written exchanges in Japanese to express ideas and respond appropriately
- Interpretive Communication: Understanding and analyzing written texts and audio materials from authentic Japanese sources
- Presentational Communication: Creating spoken and written responses to convey information and make cultural comparisons with clarity and purpose
AP Exam Details

AP Japanese Language and Culture does not have a traditional written exam. Instead, students complete a computer-based exam in May, which is scored by the College Board and makes up 100% of the AP score. The exam includes:

Interpersonal Speaking: A simulated conversation in Japanese where students respond to prompts in real time, demonstrating spontaneous and culturally appropriate communication.

Interpersonal Writing: An email response in Japanese that requires students to use correct format, tone, and vocabulary to address a specific situation.

Interpretive Communication: Reading and listening comprehension sections based on authentic Japanese texts and audio materials, such as articles, conversations, and announcements.

Presentational Communication: A recorded cultural presentation and a written narration that assess students’ ability to organize ideas, express opinions, and make cultural comparisons clearly and fluently.
The exam is evaluated for accuracy, fluency, vocabulary use, and the ability to understand and produce Japanese in a variety of real-world and culturally relevant contexts.

AP Japanese Language and Culture Score Distribution
From 2020 to 2025, the pass rate (score of 3 or higher) declined from a high of 83.6% in 2020 to 73% in 2025, showing a gradual decrease in overall success rates.
The percentage of students earning a 5 was consistently high, with over 47% scoring a 5 every year from 2020 to 2024, before dropping to 40% in 2025.
Mean scores remained strong but trended downward, peaking at 3.92 in 2020 and settling at 3.68 in 2024 and 3.72 in 2023 before falling to an estimated 2025 low.
