AP Music Theory

Course Description

AP Music Theory is a college-level course that develops students’ understanding of music through listening, performance, analysis, and written composition. Students learn to recognize and describe musical processes and structures, using visual, aural, and written methods. Topics include pitch, rhythm, harmony, voice leading, form, and musical notation. The course emphasizes the development of strong aural skills, including sight-singing and melodic/harmonic dictation, alongside music literacy and composition techniques.

  • Musical Analysis: Study of music theory concepts such as intervals, chords, cadences, part-writing, and form

  • Aural Skills: Development of ear training through melodic and harmonic dictation, and sight-singing

  • Written Performance: Practice in notating, analyzing, and composing music using standard Western notation

  • Creative Application: Opportunities to compose original music and analyze excerpts from classical and modern repertoire

AP Exam Details

AP Music Theory Score Distribution

  • From 2020 to 2025, pass rates (scores of 3 or higher) declined from 69.2% to 60%, while mean scores dropped from 3.28 to around 3.01, reflecting a gradual downward trend in overall performance.

  • The percentage of top scores (5s and 4s) steadily decreased over the years, with 5s falling from 24.2% in 2020 to 18% in 2025, and 4s from 19.3% to 18%.

  • Lower scores (1s and 2s) increased over time, with 1s rising from 8.8% in 2020 to 15% in 2025, and 2s reaching 25%, suggesting more students are struggling with the exam in recent years.
