AP Spanish Language and Culture
Course Description
AP Spanish Language and Culture is a college-level course that allows students to develop and showcase their skills in Spanish while exploring cultural themes from across the Spanish-speaking world. The course emphasizes real-world communication and intercultural understanding through listening, speaking, reading, and writing tasks. Students engage with authentic materials such as articles, podcasts, conversations, and literary works, building their proficiency across personal, societal, and global contexts.

- Interpersonal Communication: Participating in spoken and written exchanges in Spanish on a variety of everyday and cultural topics
- Interpretive Communication: Understanding and analyzing written texts and audio materials from authentic Spanish-language sources
- Presentational Communication: Creating spoken and written responses to express ideas, share opinions, and compare cultural practices and perspectives
AP Exam Details

AP Spanish Language and Culture does not have a traditional written exam. Instead, students complete a comprehensive, computer-based exam in May, which is scored by the College Board and makes up 100% of the AP score. The exam includes:

Interpersonal Speaking: A simulated conversation in Spanish where students respond to prompts in real time, demonstrating fluency and appropriate cultural expression.

Interpersonal Writing: An email reply in Spanish that requires correct format, tone, and vocabulary tailored to the situation.

Interpretive Communication: Reading and listening comprehension tasks based on authentic Spanish texts and audio materials, including articles, interviews, and literary excerpts.

Presentational Communication: A persuasive essay and a recorded cultural comparison that assess students’ ability to express ideas clearly, organize arguments, and make meaningful cultural connections.
The exam is evaluated for fluency, accuracy, vocabulary control, and the ability to understand and communicate effectively in Spanish across various real-world and culturally relevant contexts.
